“Randomness and intuition” with Yuka @ The Renaissance Workshop – PART 1

In these days I should have already been in Belfast, but due to Covid I am stuck in Italy. I have been locked in the house for days and the hours go by slowly. The few drawing materials I have in Genoa for emergencies are running out and I can’t go out and buy more, so it’s a bit of a complex situation, but I decided to draw anyway. So on Friday and Saturday I took part in a double session that London-based group The Renaissance Workshop organized together with model and artist Yuka Tanaka. The title was “Randomness and intuition” and the stated aim was to spend a few hours working without stiffness, appreciating the joy of drawing in the moment leaving behind worries about the quality of the final drawing. For this the organizer encouraged experimentation and the use of unusual materials.

I must say that, while it was the perfect session for me right now given the lack of my usual materials, on the other hand it was difficult to experiment with the limit of the very few techniques available (remember, not only do I not have many materials at hand, but I can’t even go out to get more).

Add to this the fact that there is no way I can get the scanner that I have here to work (and I had plenty of time to try every possible approach and solution – thanks Epson for making difficult even the most basic problem solving), so even the quality of the images is not the best because I am forced to photograph and then improve them.

In short, I could title this article “about the inconvenience of drawing without drawing materials”.

Complaints aside, these were two very interesting sessions. Model Yuka worked on doubling her image and played with size and movement. I was unable to get the most out of her fantastic work unfortunately, but no doubt some interesting works came out.

In questi giorni avrei già dovuto essere a Belfast, ma a causa del Covid sono rimasta bloccata in Italia. Sono chiusa in casa da giorni e le ore passano lente. I pochi materiali da disegno che ho a Genova per le emergenze stanno finendo e non posso uscire a comprarne altri, quindi è un po’ una situazione complessa, ma ho deciso di disegnare comunque. Quindi venerdì e sabato ho preso parte a una doppia sessione che il gruppo con base londinese The Renaissance Workshop ha organizzato insieme alla modella e artista Yuka Tanaka. Il titolo era “Randomness and intuition” (casualità e intuizione) e lo scopo dichiarato era quello di passare qualche ora lavorando senza rigidità, apprezzando la gioia di disegnare nel momento lasciando indietro le preoccupazioni per la qualità del disegno finale. Per questo l’organizzatore incoraggiava a usare materiali inusuali, sperimentando.

Devo dire che, se da un lato si è trattato della sessione perfetta per me in questo momento data la mancanza dei miei materiali soliti, dall’altro è stato difficile sperimentare con il limite delle pochissime tecniche a disposizione (ricordate, non solo non ho molti materiali a portata di mano, ma non posso neppure uscire per procurarmene altri).

A questo si aggiunge il fatto che non riesco in alcun modo a far funzionare lo scanner che ho qui (e ho avuto tutto il tempo per tentare ogni possibile approccio e soluzione – grazie Epson per aver reso difficile anche il problem solving più basilare), quindi anche la qualità delle immagini non è delle migliori perché sono costretta a fotografarle e poi migliorarle.

Insomma, potrei intitolare questo articolo “della scomodità di disegnare senza i materiali da disegno”.

Lamentele a parte, si è trattato di due sessioni molto interessanti. La modella Yuka ha lavorato su sdoppiamento, dimensioni e movimento. Non sono riuscita a cogliere al meglio il suo fantastico lavoro purtroppo, ma senza dubbio sono usciti lavori interessanti.

Here are the works from the first part of the two sessions, held on Friday evening. I suffered a bit from the desperation of using all the materials at my disposal to try to feel comfortable with something, but the sheets were too small and few (I only have an A3 album that I miraculously bought in September without a specific reason) and some works are missing because I couldn’t take decent pictures. I worked with pencil, graphite, powdered graphite, colored chalks, charcoal.

Ecco i lavori dalla prima parte delle due sessioni, tenutasi venerdì sera. Ho patito un po’ la disperazione del provare tutti i materiali a mia disposizione per tentare di sentirmi a mio agio con qualcosa, ma i fogli erano troppo piccoli e pochi (ho solo un album A3 che per miracolo comprai a settembre senza una motivazione specifica) e alcuni lavori mancano perché non sono riuscita a scattare foto decenti. Ho lavorato con matita, grafite, grafite in polvere, gessetti colorati, carboncino.

Since among the results of the session I especially like the short poses of 1 and 3 minutes (those collected in a single sheet) I decided to use Procreate to collect them in a video to make them dynamic. Here is the result, which I am very satisfied with:

Poichè tra i risultati della sessione mi piacciono soprattutto le pose brevi da 1 e 3 minuti (quelle raccolte in un unico foglio) ho deciso di riprenderle in Procreate e raccoglierle in un video per renderle dinamiche. Ecco il risultato, del quale sono molto soddisfatta:
