How I ended up with a 3-hour pose in charcoal and no eraser :D

The last few weeks have been a bit tough in terms of commitments: due to Easter holidays and the previous trip to Italy I had a surge in work and practically zero time to draw, paint and create. However, in unsuspecting times I had purchased a series of portrait sessions at the Crescent Art Center here in Belfast, and last Thursday was the first. I must say my lesson did not start in the best way: I had written to the centre to ask what material I should bring and I was told not to bring anything because I would be provided with all the material during the lesson. In order not to be the one that shows up anyway with her own material I followed the advice, and as soon as I arrived I found that all the other people had their own materials and at my disposal there were just some charcoal and some paper, not even a rubber or clamps to attach the paper to the easel. So I ended up with a three hours pose and just a sheet of paper and some charcoal, and it seemed like a waste. However, I rolled up my sleeves and decided to make the situation work: I found a big enough sheet (a cut of an A1) and worked in charcoal for three hours on the same pose without practically erasing (a colleague sometimes lent me the eraser , but I was sorry to ask for it all the time). Basically I used the charcoal as I would use ink, with the idea in mind that the first draft had to be good. In the end the mishap turned out to be positive because it pushed me to work differently than usual: normally I wouldn’t use charcoal for such a long pose, without an eraser and with such a density of detail. In short, the situation added some spice to the session, and in the end I was very satisfied with the result.

Le ultime settimane sono state un po’ dure in quanto a impegni: a causa delle feste comandate e del precedente viaggio in Italia ho avuto un’impennata nel lavoro e praticamente zero tempo per disegnare e creare. Tuttavia, in tempi non sospetti avevo acquistato una serie di sessioni di ritratto al Crescent Art Centre qui a Belfast, e giovedì scorso c’è stata la prima. Devo dire la mia lezione non è iniziata nel migliore dei modi: avevo scritto alla segreteria per chiedere quale materiale avrei dovuto portare e mi è stato risposto di non portare nulla perché mi sarebbe stato fornito tutto durante la lezione. Per non fare la figura di quella che si presenta comunque con il proprio materiale ho seguito il consiglio, e appena arrivata mi sono invece ritrovata in mezzo a una classe di altre persone con i propri materiali e a mia disposizione solo carboncino e neppure una gomma o le mollette per attaccare il foglio al cavalletto. Quindi mi sono ritrovata con tre ore di posa e solo un foglio e del carboncino, e mi è parso uno spreco. Tuttavia, mi sono rimboccata le maniche e ho deciso di far funzionare la situazione: ho trovato un foglio abbastanza ampio (un A1 tagliato) e lavorato a carboncino per tre ore sulla stessa posa senza praticamente cancellare (un collega mi ha prestato a tratti la gomma, ma mi spiaceva chiederla di continuo). In pratica ho usato il carboncino come userei l’inchiostro, con in mente l’idea che doveva essere buona la prima. Alla fine la disavventura si è rivelata positiva perché mi ha spinta a lavorare diversamente dal solito: normalmente non userei il carboncino per una posa così lunga, senza una gomma e con una tale densità di dettagli. Insomma, la situazione ha aggiunto un po’ di pepe alla sessione, e alla fine sono stata molto soddifatta del risultato.
