Alice Neel at Pinacoteca Agnelli in Turin

If there is one artist to whom I owe a great deal, it is Alice Neel. I have loved her work since the first time I came across one of her portraits, which was several years ago now. At the time I had never seen anything like it: a style so distinctive and so far from naturalism, and yet somehow truer than a photographic portrait. To be clear, it depends what you are looking for in a portrait. A portrait can of course be understood as a purely aesthetic matter, but for me what counts is the soul, the personality, the thought, the attitude, the essence of a person. Is it possible to capture the living essence of a subject? Neel, I think, is proof that the answer is yes.

Over the years I have studied her work extensively, but the only painting I had seen in person was the one in the permanent collection at the National Gallery of Ireland in Dublin. So when I saw that the Pinacoteca Agnelli in Turin was dedicating an exhibition to her, I had to book my tickets to Turin straight away. What a thrill to see so many works in person!

Se c’è un’artista alla quale devo molto, quella è Alice Neel. Adoro il suo lavoro dalla prima volta che mi è capitato di vedere uno dei suoi ritratti. Stiamo parlando di diversi anni fa e al tempo non avevo mai visto uno stile del genere: così particolare e decisamente non naturalistico, allo stesso tempo più vero dei ritratti fotografici. Intendiamoci: dipende da cosa si cerca in un ritratto. Per quanto un ritratto possa essere naturalmente inteso come una questione estetica, per me n realtà l’importante è l’anima, la personalità, il pensiero, l’atttudine, l’essenza insomma. È possibile catturare l’essenza viva di un soggetto? Secondo me Neel è la prova che la risposta è sì.

Negli anni ho studato ampiamente il suo lavoro, ma l’unico quadro che avevo visto dal vivo è quello contenuto nella collezione permanente della Galleria Nazionale di Dublino. Ergo quando ho visto che la Pinacoteca Agnelli a Torino le avrebbe dedicato una mostra non potevo che correre a prenotare i miei biglietti per Torino. Che emozione vedere così tante operre dal vivo!
