6 months of sketchbook

I usually publish finished works that have a bit more substance, but the work I consider as such is based on an incredible amount of spontaneous sketches that I collect in a sketchbook I always keep in my bag. I often draw when I’m traveling, sometimes when I sit at a table waiting for friends, or when I’m on the couch in the evening and don’t know what to do. The references are varied, from random photographic material to people sitting around me on public transport or at the airport. The purpose of all this material isn’t to have finished works, but to keep my brain and hand trained, as well as to pass the time or jot down something that struck me. I almost never publish the works from my sketchbook, but to celebrate the end of this somewhat difficult year I thought I’d scan some pages from my current notebook – a simple Moleskine started in June – and share my favorites here. Here they are.

In genere pubblico lavori finiti che abbiano un po’ più di sostanza, ma il lavoro che considero tale si basa su un’incredibile quantità di schizzi estemporanei che raccolgo in uno sketchbook che tengo sempre in borsa. Spesso disegno quando sono in viaggio, a volte quando mi siedo a un tavolo ad aspettare gli amici, o ancora quando sono la sera sul divano e non so cosa fare. Le referenze sono varie, da materiale fotografico random a gente seduta intorno a me sui mezzi o in aeroporto. Lo scopo di tutto questo materiale non è di avere lavori fatti e finiti, ma mantenere cervello e mano allenati, oltre a passare il tempo o appuntare qualcosa che mi ha colpita. Non pubblico quasi mai i lavori dallo sketchbook, ma per celebrare la fine di questo anno un po’ duro ho pensato di scansionare alcune pagine dal mio attuale taccuino – un semplice Moleskine iniziato a giugno – e pubblicare qui le mie preferite. Eccole.
